Bicester is a town and civil parish in the Cherwell district of northeastern Oxfordshire in England.
This historic market centre is one of the fastest growing towns in Oxfordshire. Development has been favoured by its proximity to junction 9 of the M40 motorway linking it to London, Birmingham and Banbury. It has good road links to Oxford, Kidlington, Brackley, Buckingham, Aylesbury and Witney, as well as a railway stations on two axes; Bicester North and Bicester Village.
At Woodward Chartered Surveyors we have a good working knowledge of various house types from different eras and we are therefore well qualified to inspect and report on the variety of buildings in Bicester. There are pros and cons for each building type from different periods and our reports give a balanced assessment of the houses.
The town developed considerably during the twentieth century but the old town has not changed greatly. It is known for the variety of styles and materials displayed in its streets, where houses dating from the 16th to the 19th century stand side by side. Our property surveyors are aware that behind the brick, stone and rendered facades of some of the 16th century buildings are the original timber frames and some consideration of their structural condition is vital. Timber continued to be used in the solid brick walls of the 19th century.
There has been much public and private building on the outskirts. Priory Road, for example, dates from the first decade of the 20th century, the council houses on the Buckingham Road from after the First World War, the Highfield estate mostly from the 1930's, but partly, together with the Bardwell estate, from after the Second World War. Between 1947 and 1956 over 600 council houses in all have been erected, of which 300 were especially made to house civilian workers at the Ordnance Depot. Many council built properties have moved into private ownership but there are modern private detached housing which feature brick and artificial stone facings to the cavity walls.
